Criterium-Pacific Engineers has is now open in Honolulu, serving the island of Oahu and the entire state. John McLain, P.E., president of the firm, is a licensed, Professional Engineer with nearly 30 years’ experience as a civil engineer.
The business is an independently owned and operated affiliate of Criterium Engineers, one of North America’s leading consulting engineering firms based in Freeport, Maine. Criterium has 35 affiliated offices located across North America—stretching from Maine to Ontario to Hawaii.

Prior to establishing a Criterium franchise, McLain founded and operated a 50-person engineering company in Colorado. Following a thoughtful succession plan for his Colorado business, McLain and his family relocated to Hawaii to live in and support the community that they felt a connection with after their first visit to the state in 2012.
In addition to founding an engineering firm in Colorado, McLain worked at various consulting engineering firms. He has extensive experience with international, federal, state, municipal, resort, and private projects. McLain offers specialty services in retaining wall design, complex drainage solutions as well as erosion and sediment control.
McLain is a member of the American Consulting Engineers Council, National Society of Professional Engineers, Urban Land Institute, Congress for New Urbanism, Community Associations Institute and the Honolulu Board of Realtors.
